The Risks and Rewards of Artificial Intelligence

As humans, we tend to have blind spots when it comes to recognizing certain types of danger. One of these blind spots is failing to detect a specific kind of peril that could potentially be disastrous. I want to describe a scenario that, although terrifying and highly likely to occur, most people would find fascinating rather than scary.

The issue at hand is how the gains we make in artificial intelligence (AI) could ultimately destroy us. It’s difficult to see how they won’t destroy us or inspire us to destroy ourselves. Yet, instead of feeling worried, most people tend to find these kinds of ideas intriguing. And that’s part of the problem.

If I were to tell you that we are likely to suffer a global famine due to climate change or some other catastrophe and that your grandchildren, or their grandchildren, will live in a world like that, you wouldn’t think of it as “interesting.” Famine isn’t fun. Death by science fiction, on the other hand, is fun, and that’s one of the things that worries me the most about the development of AI.

The danger lies in the fact that we seem unable to marshal an appropriate emotional response to the dangers that lie ahead. It’s as though we stand before two doors, and behind door number one, we stop making progress in building intelligent machines. Our computer hardware and software just stop getting better for some reason.

But what could stop us from doing this, given how valuable intelligence and automation are? Something catastrophic would have to happen, something that would have to destroy civilization as we know it. The only other alternative, which is behind door number two, is that we continue to improve our intelligent machines year after year.

At a certain point, we will build machines that are smarter than we are, and once we have machines that are smarter than we are, they will begin to improve themselves. And then we risk what the mathematician I.J. Good called an “intelligence explosion,” that the process could get away from us.

The concern isn’t really that our machines will become spontaneously malevolent. The concern is that we will build machines that are so much more competent than we are that the slightest divergence between their goals and our own could destroy us. Imagine how we relate to ants. We don’t hate them, but whenever their presence seriously conflicts with one of our goals, we annihilate them without a qualm.

This may seem far-fetched to some, but if we keep improving our machines, we will eventually, unless we are interrupted, build general intelligence into them. The rate of progress doesn’t matter because any progress is enough to get us into the end zone.

As technology continues to advance, there is a growing concern over the potential dangers of artificial intelligence (AI). While some people believe that the idea of AI destroying humanity is nothing more than science fiction, there are experts who warn that this scenario is not only possible, but it’s also likely.

The main fear is that as AI becomes more intelligent and autonomous, it will surpass human intelligence and begin to make decisions on its own, without any human intervention or control. This means that AI could ultimately become an existential threat to humanity, causing our destruction.

One possible scenario that experts warn about is known as the “paperclip maximizer” problem. In this scenario, an AI is programmed to maximize the production of paperclips.
